5 current fashion trends from the Boardwalk Empire era

Styles will come and go with the times, but Boardwalk Empire has made it clear that certain fashion trends are here to stay. No, men may not be walking around in 3-piece suits like Nucky Thompson, but many of the sharpest trends from the 1920s are still popular today. 3-piece suits aside, here are 5 fashion trends that are current in both the prohibition era and in 2012.

Fedoras

While it isn’t the only style of hat you seen worn by the Boardwalk Empire cast, it is certainly the most popular. With its 3-inch brim and classic style, the fedora has been a very popular hat ever since the 1920s.

Suspenders

While perhaps more practical than fashionable during the Prohibition era, suspenders have made a comeback in the 2000’s usually worn as a fashion statement. This could be thanks to shows and movies like Boardwalk Empire, Casino Royale, and Mad Men.

Round glasses

Also known as John Lennon glasses, these specs have become somewhat of a pop culture icon themselves. These perfectly round lenses can be spotted on many characters in Boardwalk Empire including Richard Harrow.

Currently wearing: Mary-Kate Olsen and Samuel L. Jackson.

Slicked back hair

Michael Pitt proves he can pull off the slicked back hair in both the 1920s and 2012. He’s pictured here in a recent Prada campaign sporting his Boardwalk Empire ‘do. This hairstyle is currently one of the most common hairstyles among men anywhere from their late teens right into old age.

Currently wearing: Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, and Jon Hamm.

Oxford shoes

As the water washes up over Nucky’s Oxfords in the opening credits, it sets the tone for the type of fashion the audience is about to experience through the entire series. The Oxford shoe first became popular in the 1800s when fashion started becoming more practical and less flashy. Because of this, the Oxford is a flashy yet comfortable shoe that has stood the test of time popping in and out of men’s regular wardrobes since its creation.
